Most of the new parents are surprised by what they find out about themselves and about their babies when they are born. Their partners present their own opinions about what parents should do, opinions which they formed in their childhood. A part of you may want your partner to get involved in raising your baby, but there is also another part of you which doesn't want them to get involved and which believes that the mother should play the most important role in your baby's life. It is not easy to solve these problems when you are tired after giving birth to your baby.
Giving birth to a baby can be a pretty scaring process, especially if you haven't had too much experience with babies. It takes time, support and exercise to learn how to take care of a little one. There are a lot of intimate moments when the father can take care of the baby. Some things they could take care of would be giving the baby a bath, changing their diapers, swinging them and holding them. Your partner will always need to be encouraged in order to adapt to the right rhythm and he also needs support and pieces of advice from other parents.
It is very difficult for the new parents to let someone else take care of their baby. It doesn't matter how tired they are, how fed up they are because their baby always comes first. This is why most of the parents out there don't fancy the idea of letting someone else take care of the little one. There are some who give too many pieces of advice and some who act as if the father was the most important person in the baby's life, not the mother. There should always be communication and support in such situations.
The time you spend with your baby is an excellent opportunity for you to discover your skills and to learn what it takes to be a good and complete parent. It can be quite difficult to discover yourself as a parent when you have to compete with someone else or when someone else asks for your help.
The discussions related to the baby often start from what your baby can learn in the family, from how a parent should act and so on. You should always split your responsibilities when it comes to a baby and talk to other parents, too as they might have a bit more experience with this kind of things and with the little ones. Ask them how they do it, ask them what it takes for you to be a good parent, ask them how you should respond to your baby's needs and to their behavior and identify all the possible obstacles you may overcome, thus getting a solution for any uncomfortable situation you might be faced with as a parent.
Taking care of a baby is all about communicating and asking for opinions because no one is a good parent if they aren't willing to learn anything from the others who are in the same situation.

The mother of a baby is the most busy person on earth, when she is not very gathered about her daily routine vis-à-vis the baby.
Breast feeding
Everyday she has to bother about the baby's feeding, sleeping, clothing, changing and bathing. It is the best to feed your own milk to the child. Please do not forget to give her the first milk of yours because that would contain colostrums, which is vital for the immune system of the child. Mother's milk will always create the body resistance and the child will be a healthy one in future.
When you are breast feeding your child, the food that causes problems in your body may be communicated to the baby as well. Foods that cause gas or cold should be avoided or the baby will have uncomfortable state or congestion.
Bottle feeding
If you are bottle-feeding your baby for some reasons, then make sure that the bottles are well sterilized and clean. Scrub them with washing liquids. Boil them for 25 minutes to kill unwanted organism that may have developed in it due to the fermenting milk. Steam sterilizer and cold sterilizer methods are also there, about which one has to consult with an expert and should see to it that those are readily available in the market.
Baby sleeping
The materials needed to put the baby to sleep are a good, firm mattress, sheets and blankets. Keep one feet distance from the nostril range of the baby if you are lying along with your baby on the same bed. There should not be unnecessary clothing or clothes around the baby's body and bed which may cause temperature rise and heating. The baby is not going to talk about it, and you should be sensitive enough to remove the body coverings as much as possible. There should be a mosquito net, or at least a netted covering around the baby to keep away the flies and the mosquitoes.
Clothing
Summer clothes should be light cotton ones. When the baby is taken out, make sure that his head does not get the direct sun. In winter, there may be sweaters, trousers and other woolens.
Changing
The baby's diapers should be regularly changed. The intervals should be fixed according to the baby's routine of potting and wetting. Despite the routine, the baby may need changing because of untimely nature calls at times. It is the baby's right to feel dry at every moment. See to it that the bed is not wetted and the smelly clothes and bed sheets are removed.
Bathing
The baby needs a mouth washing with cotton. A bath tub large enough to hold it and is easy to wash should be made available. The baby should enjoy the water which can be assessed if leg splashing which is very distinct. The baby should be rubbed with baby oil and baby cream. The nail clippers should be used at bath time. After bath, the baby should be thoroughly dried and should be applied with a baby powder.
Immunisation
The baby should be immunized against Small Pox & Measles with BCG within 3 months of its age. The first DPT (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Psertussis, Polio, HIB, Meningitis C) is due within the first 2 months followed by the 2nd and the 3rd one at one month intervals. The MMR vaccination against Measles, Mumps and Rubella should be done within 1 years of age. The boosters should be taken after the baby is 4 years old.
Training and Education
Though regular training and teaching should not be started before the age of three years, the child's habits and sense of discipline is cultivated through the discipline the mother maintains. When the mother is calm against odds like the baby fever, or baby dysentery while making sure of the treatments, the child gets the idea to be calm against disastrous times.
The most important babycare tip
The parents should find enough time to spend with the baby.

Recent news seems to be full of advice and information about protecting babies from the dangers of sun exposure. This is good. The Skin Cancer Foundation says that even one childhood sunburn doubles the risk of skin cancer later in life. And, the risk of developing melanoma, the most deadly of all skin cancers, doubles for those who have had five or more sunburns at any age. So, parents taking care that their babies are not exposed to the dangers of UV rays from the sun is a welcome and overdue trend.
However, most advice focuses first on using sun block. While sun block should be used...and make no mistake about that...the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends sun block in combination with sun protection clothing. This is an important distinction.
Babies-and all children and adults-should wear hats and long sleeve shirts while in the sun. Sun block should be applied to uncovered areas of the skin. And it should be reapplied at least every two hours. And, everyone should stay out of the sun during peak hours, usually 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
In addition, there is growing recognition that the eyes should be protected from exposure to the sun. Although most of the educational focus on sun exposure is on skin cancer, melanoma of the eye can develop and sun glasses are a good idea.
Sun protection clothing manufacturers are working hard to develop new fabrics that supply maximum sun protection. One such manufacturer is Coolibar, headquartered in Minneapolis, which recently introduced its ZnO Suntect fabric which embeds millions of tiny particles of zinc oxide into every fiber. This is the same ingredient that is used to block UVA & UVB in better sunscreens and to treat mild skin irritations and burns including diaper rash. A recent study by Spanish scientists showed that red, blue and violet colored fabrics provided more protection than yellow. However, if you decide to forego buying sun protection clothing, please be sure the clothing you put your child in is tightly woven. Loose fabric does not provide the protection your baby needs.
While the new spotlight on protecting babies from sun exposure is welcome, sun block is only part of the answer. Use sun block in combination with sun protection clothing. Reapply sun block often. Stay out of the sun during peak hours. Be safe. And keep your children safe.

First off congratulations on your newborn baby! While at the hospital, ask the nurses and doctors as many questions as you can think of there is no dumb question. The nurses working with you have been around a lot of babies and will be happy to show you anything they know on extra tips to help with your baby. Don't forget to enlist any family and friends to help out for the first few weeks. The granny's are already pros, and can teach you a lot. So keep this in mind when they are giving advice. Do not feel obligated to use every ones instructions follow your instincts.
First and most important is the car seat. Follow the instructions, if you need help the hospital nurse will help, and there is always a number to the manufacturer. Just do not buy a used car seat. You have no way of knowing if the seat has been in a car wreck. If a car seat has been in a wreck, this impairs the protection that a car seat is meant to provide. If your in a wreck call the manufacturers some will send you another car seat just for asking.
Do not be afraid to hold your baby. While this seems intimidating as long as you support the head there are many positions you can hold your baby in. Against your shoulder, across your lap. With your hand under the baby's chest, neck, and jaws you can actually lay the baby on your forearm, good for leaving your other hand free.
If your going to breast feed ask the hospital to send a lactation specialist to your room, and let them know you want a pump. This will help out so much. In addition ask where you can rent a pump. This will make a big difference in milk production as well as keeping the breast from overfilling. Just remember to ask to be shown how to nurse, and do not get frustrated if this does not work the first time. Give the baby about 15 minutes on each breast.
When formula feeding give them a couple ounces of course ask the doctor first. If the baby has any problem with feeding call your doctor for advice. Whichever method you use be sure to burp the baby often. This is easy enough, you can pat the baby's back gently and hold in whichever position is most comfortable to you. If the baby still seems to have gas you can lay the baby in your lap, and lightly bounce, your knees while patting the baby's back, and supporting the head.
Changing your babies diapers. At the hospital diapers are provided, you may choose to use cloth, and this is a personal preference. Just remember a baby's bladder is no larger than a peanut, so check them often, and remember you will be going through a lot of diapers for the first few months about 10 per day. If you do not have baby wipe warmer, at least run a few through warm water. Always clean the back too, as urine and feces can go up the back. Make sure with a female to always clean front to back and get in all the folds. Keep diaper rash medicine on hand and use as a preventative with each diaper change. An old home remedy, if you brown some dry flour in a pan, this can be used as baby powder without all the dust. Now that the diaper change is done this is the time to clean the umbilical cord with alcohol as directed by your doctor.
Bathing your baby is relaxing for the baby. This is best done at the changing table even if it is the baby tub since all the baby supplies are right there. Until the umbilical cord falls off it is best to sponge bath, this is quick and easy. Since your sponge bathing you can leave the diaper on until you get to that part. Get a little container of warm water, use the washcloth to wash the baby from head to toe all but the face, start with the hair, and leave the private area for last. To wash the hair just use the damp cloth or baby brush lightly to clean the head, and be careful when cleaning soft spot. While washing the baby keep dipping the wash cloth in the water to keep it warm, and be sure to get in all the crevices. Take your time with the fingers and toes. You can use a q-tip to clean the creases around the neck. After your all done with the body, wash the face and eyes with a cotton ball with just water. Quickly dry the baby, then give them a nice light massage all over with a little lotion, then dress. When the baby graduates to tub baths, make sure the room is warm. Lay a towel on the changing table to set the baby tub on. Fill the tub with just a couple inches of water check the water with your elbow, to make sure it is not too warm or cold. Most important is the support, put your hand under the babies head with one hand, and use the other hand to wash the baby, soak up water and keep squeezing this over the baby to keep them comfy. To wash the back you can lay the baby over your arm long ways and support the head while working quickly to wash the back. Just make sure you give one last rinse over, and until the baby then quickly wrap baby, and dry the baby. Dress the baby so they will not be cold.
Finally the bathing, and feeding are done. So you can put the baby to bed. The baby's bed, should not have a bunch of covers, blankets stuffed animals or cute items in the bed with the baby. As long as the baby is swaddled, and you keep the temperature warm in the home this is enough. The baby needs to be trained to sleep on the back. You can not be too careful because of sudden infant death syndrome. It is best to keep the bassinet in the room with you if you can, until the baby is 3 months or be sure there is a baby monitor next to the baby's bed so you can hear them if there is any problem. It can take weeks for a baby to sleep all night, so catch your sleep when the baby is napping so you can get your strength up.
Some vanity items that you will find useful. A baby swing which can not be used until baby can hold the head up, a baby wipe warmer, a battery operated bottle warmer/cooler combo, baby Einstein lullaby music, sun protection-all year round, portable changing pad, a diaper genie, a nursing pillow-this can be used even when not nursing to help support baby, netting for the top of a playpen when outside, baby monitors, sleep position blocks, and a baby sling.
Recommended reading topics. Sudden infant death syndrome. Shaken baby syndrome. What to expect the first year is the best book I ever read about child care be sure to buy it or check it out from the library.
Important tips: Do not shake your baby. Do not ever leave a baby unattended in a car even for a minute. Always completely engage the belts and support for placing baby in the car seat per the manufacturer instructions. Never leave a baby unattended on changing table, or in the baby bath, or anywhere except the baby bed, not even for a second.

Home Health Care Nursing Information and Overview
Home health care is allowing the patient and their family to maintain dignity and independence. According to the National Association for Home Care, there are more than 7 million individuals in the United States in need of home health care nurse services because of acute illness, long term health problems, permanent disability or terminal illness.
Home Health Care Basics
Nurses practice in a number of venues: Hospital settings, nursing homes, assisted living centers, and home health care. Home health care nursing is a growing phenomenon as more patients and their families desire to receive care in their homes. The history of home health care stems from Public Health Nursing where public health nurses made home visits to promote health education and provide treatment as part of community outreach programs. Today academic programs train nurses in home care and agencies place home health care nurses with ailing individuals and their families depending on the nurse's experience and qualifications. In many cases there is a shared relationship between the agency and the academic institution.
Many changes have taken place in the area of home health care. These include Medicare and Medicaid, and Long Term Care insurance reimbursement and documentation. It is important for the nurse and nursing agency to be aware of the many factors involved for these rules and regulations resulting from these organizations. Population and demographic changes are taking place as well. Baby boomers approaching retirement and will present new challenges for the home health care industry. Technology and medical care in hospitals has lead to shorter inpatient stay and more at-home rehabilitation. Increases in medical outpatient procedures are also taking place with follow-up home care. This has resulted in the decrease of mortality rate from these technologies and medical care has lead to increases in morbidity and chronic illness that makes the need for home health care nursing a greater priority.
Home Health Care Nurse Job Description
Through an array of skills and experience, home health care nurses specialize in a wide range of treatments; emotional support, education of patients who are recovering from illnesses and injury for young children and adults, to women who have experienced recent childbirth, to the elderly who need palliative care for chronic illness.
A practicing nurse must have the skills to provide care in a unique setting such as someone's home. The nurse is working with the patient and the family and must understand the communication skills for such dynamics. Rapport is evident in all nursing positions, but working in a patient's own living space needs a different level of skill and understanding. There is autonomous decision making as the nurse is no longer working as a team with other nurses in a structured environment, but is now as a member of the "family" team. The host family has cultural values that are important and are different for every patient and must be treated with extreme sensitivity. Other skills include critical thinking, coordination, assessment, communication, and documentation.
Home health care nurses also specialize in the care of children with disabilities that requires additional skills such as patience and understanding of the needs of the family. Children are living with disabilities today that would have resulted in mortality just twenty years ago. Genetic disorders, congenital physical impairments, and injury are just a few. Many families are familiar with managing the needs of the child, but still need expert care that only a home health care nurse can provide. It is important that a home health care nurse is aware of the expertise of the family about the child's condition for proper care of the child. There are many complexities involved, but most important, a positive attitude and positive reinforcement is of utmost importance for the development of the child.
Medication coordination between the home health care nurse, doctor, and pharmacist, ensures proper management of the exact science behind giving the patient the correct dose, time of administration, and combinations. Home health care nurses should be familiar with pharmacology and taught in training about different medications used by patients in the clinical setting.
Many advanced practicing nurses are familiar with medication regiments. They have completed graduate level programs. Home health care agencies believe that a nurse should have at least one year of clinical experience before entering home health care. Advanced practicing nurses can expedite that training by helping new nurses understand the home health care market and teaching.
Employment and Salary
According to the United States Department of Labor, there were 2.4 million nurses in America, the largest healthcare occupation, yet many academic and hospital organizations believe there is a gross shortage in nursing staff. The shortage of nurses was 6% in 2000 and is expected to be 10% in 2010. The average salary for hospital nursing is $53,450 with 3 out of 5 nursing jobs are in the hospital. For home health care, the salary is $49,000. For nursing care facilities, they were the lowest at $48,200.
Training and continuing education
Most home health care nurses gain their education through accredited nursing schools throughout the country with an associate degree in nursing (ADN), a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing (BSN), or a master's degree in nursing (MSN). According to the United States Department of Labor, in 2004 there were 674 BSN nursing programs, 846 ADN programs. Also, in 2004, there were 417 master's degree programs, 93 doctoral programs, and 46 joint BSN-doctoral programs. The associate degree program takes 2 to 3 years to complete, while bachelors degrees take 4 years to complete. Nurses can also earn specialized professional certificates online in Geriatric Care or Life Care Planning.
In addition, for those nurses who choose to pursue advancement into administrative positions or research, consulting, and teaching, a bachelor's degree is often essential. A bachelor's degree is also important for becoming a clinical nurse specialist, nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives, and nurse practitioners (U.S. Department of Labor, 2004).
All home health care nurses have supervised clinical experience during their training, but as stated earlier advanced practicing nurses hold master's degrees and unlike bachelor and associate degrees, they have a minimum of two years of post clinical experience. Course work includes anatomy, physiology, chemistry, microbiology, nutrition, psychology, and behavioral sciences and liberal arts. Many of these programs have training in nursing homes, public health departments, home health agencies, and ambulatory clinics. (U.S. Dep. of Labor, 2004).
Whether a nurse is training in a hospital, nursing facility, or home care, continuing education is necessary. Health care is changing rapidly and staying abreast with the latest developments enhances patient care and health procedures. Universities, continuing education programs, and internet sites, all offer continuing education. One such organization that provides continuing education is the American Nurses Association (ANA) or through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
Conclusion
There are many rewards to becoming a home health care nurse. Some rewards include the relationship with a patient and their family, autonomy, independence, and engaging in critical thinking. The 21st Century brings with it many opportunities and challenges. We must meet these challenges head on - there is an aging baby boomer population, a growing morbidity factor due to increased medical technology and patient care, and the growing shortage in nursing care.
Becoming a home health care nurse today is exciting and an opportunity to make a difference one life at a time. With clinical experience and proper education, a home health care nurse will lead the future of medical care.

When it comes to toddler's cowboy boots, leather is the primary material. It's best to get genuine leather, as it produces high quality, durable shoes. While they are a little bit more expensive than fake leather, the comfort and durability leather. This is especially important when it comes to small children's feet. New parents are always confused about what their baby feeding schedule should be. That makes sense, as you want to be able to take care of them properly. You want them to grow to be healthy, and the proper diet and nutrition is necessary for that. Of course, by getting your newborn on the right schedule, you will have a much easier time raising them. Not only will they sleep better throughout the night, they will have a much milder attitude. People will be amazed at how well behaved they are.
Obviously, for the first four months, the only thing that your baby will need will be breast milk or a milk based formula. You just need to feed them two to three times a day, and this should be in the morning and evening. By doing it at these times, you will be teaching their body when to get hungry. It will help them to get on a normal eating schedule of breakfast in the morning and dinner at night. This will also help them to fall asleep at night, allowing you to get the much needed rest you deserve.
After four months, the baby feeding schedule will shift a little bit. You can now start giving them solid food, as you will notice that they are now able to hold up their head and put their mouth around a spoon. There are plenty of baby formulas available for this stage, whether you want to go organic or not. Gerber and Enfamil are some of the more popular formula manufacturers, but there are plenty other options. There are constantly coupons for cheap deals on formula, so you should never have to spend more than $20 for a couple months worth of food.
While you are feeding your baby formula, keep in mind that you should still be trying to keep them on the morning and evening schedule. This means that they do not need to be fed more than twice a day. You simply need to do this for the next 12-14 months, when your baby will start to have his second molars coming in. If it seems difficult to remember the time frames, consider getting a printable baby feeding schedule that you can carry with you.

One of the desires of every parent is to flood their kids with all sorts of gifts. Such is this feeling that price never becomes a barrier. A desire that is perfectly understandable for they are kids around whom the life of every parent revolves, so it is not uncommon for them to want to give everything nice that life has to offer to their kids. However, if a little caution is exercised then one can be rest assured that the gift that he would be purchasing for his kids would go a long way in helping them learn some useful things before the commencement of their formal education.
People would do well to realise that the value of gift is measured not by its price tag but by the things that a kid stands to learn from it. Yes, you have read it right. Toys, if selected with a little bit of care, can actually go a long way in teaching your kids so many useful things.
A few examples would go a long way in explaining how useful baby gifts can be when it comes to teaching kids some useful things. A ball with a, b, c engraved on it can actually go a long way in helping the babies learn alphabets. A similar strategy can be adapted to introduce digits to kids. In a similar vein a CD or cassette of nursery rhymes can help kids learn these wonderful compositions.
However, since baby gifts are to purchased for babies people would do well to take care of the security aspect. It is for this very reason that objects made of steel, iron or glass should never be given to babies as they are potentially very harmful for them. If gifts are purchased keeping the above mentioned points in mind then there can be no denying the fact that they would go a long way in educating them about various things before their formal education commences.

It is always a hassle when you need to be babysitting more than a kid. Even if you are a babysitter all your life and have done it to most kids in the neighborhood, it is not always easy to be handling more than a kid. This article will give you some tips in being a babysitter of multiple kids.
Firstly, you have to take care of your babysitting license because most states in America now require a license to baby able to do your job. There are a lot of babysitting classes that offer to train you to be a professional babysitter for free. A good example of this is the Red Cross. You do have to take care of sixty kids first before you can acquire one so you have to do your practice with the kids in the neighborhood. But if you are only doing this to earn you some extra cash in school, then that is not a problem.
Responsibility is the main aspect in taking care of multiple kids. When you are in the job, you have to make sure that the children you handle are safe first. Here are some quick steps in being able to babysit multiple children:
1. Always remember that proper preparation is essential. When handling many kids, you have to be prepared to multi-task. A good idea is to be taking notes from the parents on what things are important to be done to a specific child so you won't have a hard time. One child might have to take some asthma medicine, he or she might be allergic to a specific kind of food, or another might be needed to be tucked in bed first before sleeping.
2. You also have to tell the parents first with things that you are not comfortable prior to accepting the job. Other individuals might be needed to be called to help you with specific things to be done. If you will have a misunderstanding with the parents or you do not feel repaired with the job, then maybe this is the not right thing for you.
3. It is inevitable that fights can occur between two siblings, you need to handle this kindly. Talk to the children gently and allow them to understand each other's side.
4. In rare cases, there might be medical emergencies that occur. It is important to learn basic lifesaving techniques such as CPR, but if you are uncertain, always know when to call 911. Also have the contact number of the parents. Have your cell phone at all times just in case they might not have a connection.

Never thought you would grow old? Never thought you would be like your parents? Many of us baby boomers, now age 43-61 are beginning to face health care issues our parents face on a daily basis and we are surprised and shocked this is happening to us. We simply can't believe it.
How many of us have middle aged brothers and sisters? When we talk to them discussion always moves to the health topic. So, how are you feeling? We are surprised to find that our siblings, previously healthy, now have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis and other health issues. And we are wondering how this is happening since we talked about the health of our parents and agreed that we would never be like them. And we are now embarrassed to admit we are facing some of the same health issues that affect our parents.
So then the conversation moves to the health of our parents who are age sixty plus, many in their eighties. Sometimes we feel they rely too much on their physicians, trust them too much. They see their physicians once a quarter, take a long list of medications and go for frequent tests. We wonder if all of this attention to medicine makes them older, frequently ill, less strong, and more reliant on physicians and we swear again this will never happen to us. What are the chances?
According to common research the state of our health relies thirty percent on our genes and seventy percent on our own lifestyle. So even though our parents have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and osteoporosis this does not mean this is inevitably our path. However, if we do not change our lifestyle to be different from that of or parents, this will be our path. How difficult is this?
We grew up in a home with our parents, eating the same foods, acquiring the same habits of exercise and activity or not, having some of the same hobbies or not. The level of influence is significant. It is only when we see that this influence has negative results are we able to distinguish between healthy and non-healthy lifestyles. We may see this through personal experience, through education, through others. However we see it, if we do not want to travel the path of our parents relative to health we must make significant changes.
Recommendations that were previously to exercise 2-3 times a week now recommend exercise 5-7 times a week for at least 30 minutes a day. Numbers for blood pressure, cholesterol and triglycerides that were once acceptable are now lower. Eat more fiber, drink less caffeine. Research is making us more savvy consumers. Those of us who are already on the plan of better nutrition, going to the gym and getting regular exercise may be ahead of others. But how do we sustain this as we continue to age and begin to have unexpected health issues.
This is one area where we can learn from some of our elders. I met a woman the other day that will have her 100 birthday in April. She was extremely independent all of her life, helped others through a teaching career and has maintained her mind and body. For this woman it has been her strong attitude about not relying on society or family to care for her. She feels that friends who have moved into assisted living focus more on what they cannot do and when they see friends using walkers they begin to use walkers.
On the other hand I have met sixty year olds who act more like they are one hundred. They have not taken care of their bodies, are overweight, have smoked, have not been active and they feel sorry for themselves. Some of them have been dependent on others to provide for them all of their life.
There is something to be said for independence; something to be said for having to do things for ourselves and not rely on others. Perhaps it is the sense of self confidence or self esteem that carries us into our later years more able to cope with day to day aches and pains. For those of us already with this sense, let's hope we are able to continue this attitude for the rest of our lives. For those of us not quite in this place, let's work to regain our sense of self, our self confidence and self esteem by beginning to do things on our own.
By facing the fear now, we can avoid the fear later of having to stand on our own two feet and navigate through the issues of aging that not only include health care, but housing, finances, legal preparations and end of life care. We, after all, are the baby boomers, the proud and the invincible. And most likely at some point, we will need to accept that we will have some health issues, like our parents, that nag at us on a day to day basis. And we'll have a new theme "just live with it".

If for some reason wild baby mice have been placed in your care, I have included a few tips on caring and feeding to help you give them a chance at life. Please be aware that even in the wild, mice have a 50% chance of surviving beyond 5 months of age, given a normal upbringing. The mice that do make it can live up to around 5 years if healthy. A pair will have a better chance of survival than a lone mouse.
As soon as you have your baby mice, it is important to keep them safe and warm. You can use a small pet carrier, large plastic tub or any other suitable box in which you can put them. Layer the bottom with a towel and place the mice on top. Then, use another soft material to lightly cover the mice like fleece. Place the box in a warm place, ensuring that it isn't hot; otherwise the mice will become dehydrated. A heater on the lowest setting may be all that is needed. Test the towel the mice are laying on so that it feels cosy and warm to your hand.
If the baby mice are less than 14 days old they will need dropper fed with a milk substitute until they are weaned. They usually open their eyes when they are just about weaned and able to eat by themselves. You will need to feed them every 2 hours so be prepared to get up during the night. Set your alarm. When I was looking after wild mice, I was getting up every 2 hours to check them. I have since read that during the night mother mouse would be away looking for food and may only return to the nest once to feed her babies. Use common sense, if you can manage a few night feeds, all the best for the babies chance of survival, especially in the early days.
Kitten milk is available to buy at pet shops. I used raw coconut blended up and strained. It should be 1 cup coconut to about 2 and ½ cups water. You could also use soaked almonds to make an almond milk using the same ratios. Make sure the nuts are natural and plain. Once you've made up the milk, store in a sterilised glass jar and keep in the fridge until required. When you go to feed the mice, take a quarter a cup of the milk and warm it up by pouring it in a small jug and standing in hot water. Use a dropper or baby syringe (you can get these at the chemist) to feed 1 or 2 drops of the milk at a time into the baby mouse mouth. When the mice are really young, they might not open their mouth. Be careful not to get the milk up their noses, they will splutter/cough if you do. It can be dangerous for their health if you do. The way I fed the mice was to put a facecloth down on a table and to put one mouse at a time onto it. Then you can gently hold the baby's head whilst you administer the milk with the dropper. You'll get the hang of it with a bit of practise. The baby might not seem to be taking much milk, don't worry. Very young babies may only need to get a drop or 2 on their mouth/tongues until they can take more. The main purpose here is to keep them hydrated with a little drop at a time every couple of hours.
Once the baby is fed, you need to stimulate a bowel movement. To do this, put some warm water in a small bowl and dip a cotton bud into it. Then, put the cotton bud between the baby's back legs and gently turn the bud around. You should see a little brown staining, that is their poo. Dip the other end of the bud into the water and gently stroke the baby's body, this emulates the mother licking them. After all that, tuck baby up in it's soft bedding and place in a warm spot. This is the basic routine that needs to be repeated every couple of hours during the day and at least 2-3 times during the night, especially around 1am and 5am.
As you can see, it's quite a commitment, looking after baby wild mice. But, there is also a great reward in the caring of them and the bonding you will feel as a carer.
When the babies start to open their eyes or at least take a peak, they may be taking a lot more milk and starting to walk around a little. This is when you need to be extra careful; one fall is enough to be fatal. You can make a little safe roaming area in the bottom part of a pet cage or shoebox/basin. Line it with newspaper and leaves to simulate a natural environment. The youngsters will enjoy stretching their legs and taking their first steps. This is important, as it will build up their muscles and strength.
Once the babies start to bite your fingers quite firmly when you feed them, they may be ready for a little solid food. They will also be starting to open their eyes (12-14 days old) Start very slowly with this. Try some baby fruit puree to start or natural rice pudding. The food should not be chilled. Let them lick it off your finger. Avoid putting the purees onto a dish for the mice to feed from, as they might get messy and end up with matted fur, which needs to be avoided. Some other foods to graduate to are porridge, banana, tomato, dried oat flakes, strawberry. Just go real easy with the food and keep it simple and easily digested to start with. Congratulations! You've actually made it to the weaning stage, which is quite something with wild baby mice.
Continue to provide a safe space for the mice to sleep and once weaned, they will be able to come out at night to feed. Give them a little dish near their bed so they can feed during the night. At least you can get some sleep now! Continue to offer the milk during the day and provide some water for them. Usually, wild mice will still have some mothers milk up to about 4 weeks of age.
Now you have to decide whether to keep them or release into the wild. I don't know how many mice have been successfully hand-reared and released into the wild. I would think it unlikely that they can survive. However, you've done your bit and if they seem strong and healthy and quite active, it might be possible to release them. Or, you can keep them as pets.
Finally, if you did your best and the mice died, don't feel bad. Survival chances in the best of conditions i.e. with their natural mother are still low. Just enjoy the experience you've had with them and the opportunity to get a glimpse into their little lives. They are little bundles of love and it is wonderful to have at least given them some love when otherwise they might have perished.

There is a tendency for parents to treat baby teeth as being dispensable since we all know there will be a second set of adult teeth replacing them anyway. However, baby teeth (also known as the deciduous teeth or the primary dentition) are important and are necessary to serve several functions. This is why we need to take care of them and make sure they last until the adult teeth (permanent teeth or secondary dentition) are ready to come through.
The first of the permanent teeth do not appear in the mouth until a child is about 6 years old and the last permanent teeth (not including the wisdom teeth) will appear by about 12-13 years. Therefore a child's primary teeth need to last anywhere between 5-12 years. To ensure that they last, parents need to help children look after their teeth and inculcate good oral hygiene practices from young.
The Functions of Baby Teeth
1. Biting and Chewing
The most obvious function of the primary teeth is obviously for biting and chewing food.
2. Nutrition
Children need to eat a wide variety of food to gain a well-balanced diet.
A child with limited teeth or one who is experiencing discomfort from tooth decay may refuse foods or limit food intake to those that can be consumed easily or with minimum discomfort. Chewing a variety of textures also stimulates the oral environment and exercises the jaw muscles.
The ability to bite and chew also helps to break up food into more easily digestible pieces and allow for better digestion of food. As the food is being broken up by the teeth, it is also mixed with saliva containing enzymes that begin the digestive process. A child that swallows too rapidly without chewing the food adequately will prolong the digestive process.
3. Speech
Teeth are necessary for the articulation of certain sounds. Young children who are still learning how to speak properly need their teeth to help them form words and speak clearly.
4. Development of the Jaw Bones and Facial Muscles
The presence or absence of teeth will affect the way in which the jaw bones and facial muscles develop. The growth of the jaw bones are affected by the facial muscles. Teeth and the chewing function help to exercise the facial muscles and facilitate the development of the jaw bones.
5. Place Holder
The primary teeth are place holders for the permanent teeth. They are intended to hold a space in the jaws until the permanent tooth is ready to erupt. When the permanent tooth is ready, it will push out from under the primary tooth, causing the roots of the primary tooth to break down. Therefore, the primary teeth also serve as a guide for the permanent teeth to erupt into its proper position.
When primary teeth are loss prematurely, the permanent teeth have no guide to follow. Additionally, the adjacent teeth tend to close the gap of the missing tooth, meaning there will be no space for the permanent tooth to erupt into. This can lead to crowding of the permanent teeth.
6. Aesthetics
A child without teeth or with missing teeth may look cute, but she will not agree when the premature loss of her baby teeth leads to the growth of crooked permanent teeth.
Looking after Baby Teeth
From the moment the first baby tooth appears in the mouth, parents need to take the responsibility to begin cleaning it. Initially, all that is necessary will be to take a damp cloth or piece of gauze and to wipe the tooth. Once more teeth begin to appear, you can use finger brushes that are worn over your index finger and use them to brush your baby's teeth.
When your baby is about 18 months to about 2 years old, you can purchase a child toothbrush and begin cleaning your child's teeth at least once a day. Initially, it is not necessary to use fluoridated toothpaste, especially if the drink water in your area is already fluoridated.
Remember, young children have trouble spitting out and usually end up swallowing the toothpaste, fluoride and all. This may expose your child to unnecessarily high levels of fluoride which can lead to fluorosis. Fluorosis, while not harmful, first appears as white spots on the teeth. In more severe cases, it can make the teeth appear brown and mottled. Although it is not harmful to the teeth, it is aesthetically unsightly.
If you are concerned about tooth decay, there is a new range of children's toothpaste with xylitol as an active ingredient. Xylitol also serves to prevent tooth decay.
You can encourage your child to get into the healthy practice of brushing by offering the toothbrush to your child but make sure that you perform at least one brushing for your child a day. Children have poor manual dexterity and will not brush adequately without your help. At most, they will chew on the brush and make a few cursory attempts to swipe the teeth if they are older.
As your child grows older, you can begin to teach him (or her) how to brush by guiding his (or her) hand. Once your child has mastered the art of tooth brushing, you can hand over the responsibility to your child to continue brushing, however, you may still need to keep an eye on your child to ensure the job is done properly. Tooth brushing is a task many children quickly get bored of and try to sneak out of. Some may comply with the task but do a poor job of cleaning.
It is not difficult to look after baby teeth. The challenge lies in teaching your child the process and helping him (or her) develop a healthy, lifetime habit. Knowing how important baby teeth are, it is important to ensure they last. Teaching your child to look after his (or her) primary teeth also sets the stage for healthy oral hygiene habits in future.

Schools are responsible for educating the students they enroll, but they are not the sole educators of children. Parents are educators too. The odds are that parents who value education and spend time with their children enrich their experience at school and also have children who are more successful in school. Parents who send their children to school and expect the school to "take care" of everything often have children who experience some sort of difficulty. This is especially true at the primary level.
Manners and respectful behavior should be taught at home, but reinforced in school. When it is not taught and children come into an environment where they are expected to be kind, polite and follow adult directives, but don't, there are problems. The problems are social and academic. The social impact is on their ability to build and maintain healthy relationships with peers and school adults. The academic impact is based upon their not following directions and/or acting in a way that gets them removed from the classroom. If they are removed, they are not in the class for lessons and assignments. If the teacher is constantly getting on to them, or they are disturbing the class, these students are interfering with the rights of other students to learn.
Parents have a responsibility to raise good citizens. Teaching and enforcing manners, rules, limits and respect for authority is how this is done.
Parents owe it to their children to support them and help them be the best that they can be!

Choosing the right care for your baby is one of the most important decisions you will make as a parent. It is a daunting and often heart-breaking process and it helps to be armed with information before you set out to find someone that you feel good enough about that you would trust them with your most prized possession - your baby. There are pros and cons to all child care arrangements and, like everything in life, none are without flaws. The ideal caretaker for your baby will always be you but we live in a world where many families require two incomes just to make ends meet which makes it necessary to find outside care for our children.
This article will compare the four most common child care choices - non-licensed family member or friend; babysitter/nanny; family child care; and center based child care - in terms of benefit to your child, cost, flexibility, and security. In many cases, the next best thing to a parent as caregiver is a close family member or friend. This is someone who has good judgment, is reliable, nurturing, and understands infants. If you are fortunate enough to have someone like this in your life who is offering to care for your baby, this will likely be your top choice. Your baby will thrive under the personal care of a nurturing person who shares a deep, familial bond with them. Limiting your baby's exposure to other young children in the first year can also help to cut down on illnesses and infections. A family caregiver is generally the most economical choice as well since many family members will offer their services either for free or for a nominal fee. The potential pitfalls to this child care arrangement are usually flexibility and difference of opinion. There will be times that this caregiver is sick, has an appointment, is on vacation, or is just generally unavailable. If either you or your spouse has a flexible job and an understanding boss, this may not be an issue.
If not, you will need to consider what to do for back-up care in those situations. The other sticky area in this arrangement can come in when you and your family member have differing philosophies in child-rearing. It is important that you, your spouse, and your child's caregiver have a conversation about what is most important to you and your spouse when it comes to child-rearing. Security is generally not an issue when it comes to this child care arrangement so long as the caregiver understands your boundaries when it comes to visitors. If you want your child to have individualized care in your home but do not have a family member or close friend who is able to provide care, a private nanny or babysitter is another option. In the first 12-24 months especially, children benefit from individualized care from a nurturing person who is knowledgeable about infant development.
With a nanny, your child will be able to bond with one consistent caregiver and be raised in the comfort of his/her own home. This can be an expensive option but, if you have more than one child, it is usually more cost effective than center based child care. You will also need to factor in taxes for domestic employees. With a nanny, you won't need to worry about coverage when your child is sick or leaving work for appointments. However, you will need to have a back-up plan for times when your nanny is sick or needs some time off just as you would with a family member. Possibly the most complicated area with a nanny is security. Be sure to thoroughly check the credentials and background of the person you are considering as a caregiver to your child. If you use an agency or if you do it on your own, be sure to check the individual's background on three levels in each state where they have resided - criminal activity, sex offender registry, child abuse or neglect history. You will want to set boundaries at the outset about visitors and outings with your child in order to have some control over the people your child will spend time with and interact with regularly.
A licensed family child care provider is another option that provides your child with a fairly small group setting. These providers are licensed by the state to provide care for small groups of children in their homes. Most states regulate and monitor the compliance of family child care providers. Your child can benefit from the small group setting and the home environment provided in this arrangement. Many young children are overwhelmed in the larger group setting that center based care provides (often10 or more infants in one classroom) and feel more comfortable in a smaller setting with only a few other children. Licensed family child care is generally an affordable option and many providers offer hourly rates. It is important to remember that licensed family child care providers do need days off as well and you need to plan for the times when the provider will not be available. Be sure to get a list of scheduled closing days before you enroll and ask if the provider has back-up care for unforeseen circumstances.
Another major consideration for this type of care is learning about the other people who will be involved in the home on a daily basis including the provider's family members and his/her policy regarding interaction with the children who are enrolled for care. This is something you will want to consider closely when choosing a licensed family child care provider. Licensed center based child care is another alternative. Children can benefit from the longevity of this arrangement as many children enroll as infants and stay in a center until they are able to enter the public schools. Child care centers are licensed and regulated by state so you will want to research the licensing authority for your state and find out what the requirements are for staff to child ratios, teacher qualifications, and background checks for employment. Staff to child ratios vary greatly from state-to-state, and can run the gamut from 1 caregiver to 3 infants to 1 caregiver to 6 infants. Centers that are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) adhere to smaller ratios and higher quality standards. You can find accredited centers in your area by visiting the NAEYC website.
Child care centers differ in cost and it is important to find out what is included in the weekly tuition such as meals, snacks, and enrichment activities. Be wary of the higher prices at the corporate chain centers as the extra fee is usually associated with higher overhead costs and not higher quality. Most child care centers offer weekly rates based on the number of days that your child will attend - some offer half day programs whereas others offer only full day programs. Flexibility in this type of child care arrangement is usually contingent on enrollment - when enrollment is low, the provider will probably be willing to flex or swap days but when enrollment is high this won't likely be the case - as ratios must be maintained. It is important to ask for a list of closing days when you tour the center to see if their schedule works for your family.
When you tour the center you should take note of the entrances to the facility and how they are secured. Were you able to walk right in or did you have to ring a bell to get someone's attention? Make sure that they playgrounds are fenced in and gated. The gates should not be locked (this is a fire hazard) but should be secured so that no one can easily get on or off the playground. It will take some time and research in order to find the right child care arrangement for your child and family. Many families combine two of these options to come up with one that works. Find the best fit for your baby now and remember that your child care needs will likely change as your child grows.

A baby is coming. So, are you ready? Aside from thinking of a special name for the baby, what other preparations should you make?
First of all, you have to have a good obstetrician/gynecologist who will take care of you and your baby throughout your pregnancy. You can start looking for a good pediatrician at about this time, too. You will be doing a lot of medical check-ups before and after delivery, so check your health insurance coverage. If you are working, inform your company and inquire about your maternity leave and benefits.
Start preparing the baby's room early on as you won't have much time and energy for this later. Decide on the color scheme and work your way around that when choosing furniture, curtains, rugs, and other pieces. Start scouting around and compare costs and quality. Shop for the big items first like the crib or playpen with bassinet, stroller, storage cabinet, feeding chair, bath, and your nursing chair.
When you're done with the big items, buy the small essentials. These are the feeding bottles, sterilizer, bedding, and the baby's layette. Babies grow super fast so buy only a few clothes as these are outgrown in just a few weeks. Anyway, many people give baby clothes as gifts so there's actually no need to worry. Better yet, if you're having a baby shower, wait for it before shopping so you would know what and what not to buy.
And last but not least, prepare your hospital bag. This should include baby essentials such as two to three changes of clothing, diapers, baby wipes, going home clothes, receiving blanket, a cap, and bottles and formula if you're not breastfeeding. For yourself, maternity pads or adult diapers (whichever you prefer), a bathrobe, pajamas or nightgown, house slippers, toiletries, nursing pads, some underwear, loose comfortable going home clothes, and your camera, of course!. Make sure you also have your health insurance card information with you. If you want, you may also bring extra pillows, a small cooler with drinks and some light snacks, and a baby book to record those first few moments.
It is exciting to have a baby in the house, but it is even more exciting when you are prepared.

Most babies do not sleep through the night for many reasons. Sometimes it could be due to an illness or discomfort as in colic.
But some of the sleep problems could be caused by you! You don't do this on purpose, you just did not know. You probably got advice from family and friends on how to solve the nighttime baby sleep problem.
What not to do:
(1) If your baby is under 2 months old, do not spend more than a half hour trying to sooth the baby to sleep.
(2) Please do not leave a bright light on in the baby's room at night. Just leave enough light in the room so you can change and feed your baby. Your baby needs to learn that if the room is dark it is still sleep time.
(3) As mentioned in some of my articles, do not let your baby have a bottle at night in the crib. It is best to use a pacifier.
What to do:
Having said all of that, here are a couple of tips that might help.
(1) While you are feeding your baby and baby starts to look sleepy, gently put baby into the crib. If you rock or hold your baby to help sleep, this could cause a dependency issue. Just stay near until your baby falls asleep.
(2) Should baby wake up at night, take care of what needs to be done, i.e. a change of diaper or a
feeding. BUT, do not start playing around and do not turn on the bright lights. Be very serious and put baby back in the crib. This will help your baby understand that it is still sleep time.
I invite you to try out these tips to give them time to work. Wait at least a week or more before trying the next tip.

If you're wondering if it's really necessary to fill cavities in baby teeth since they're not permanent, the resounding response by dental professionals is "yes!" The anatomical structure of baby teeth is prone to rapid break down if the dental cavity is left to progress without intervention. This is because the enamel, or the outer most layer, of the baby tooth is much thinner than an adult tooth, thus it can be penetrated faster by bacteria that causes tooth decay.
Not addressing tooth decay in baby teeth can result in painful dental infections, orthodontic issues, difficulty eating and an increased incidence of decay in permanent teeth. Keep in mind that children do not lose their last baby tooth until around the age of 12. The incisors are typically present until six to eight years of age, while the canines and molars are present until your child is 11 to 13 years of age.
When decay is detected, several factors are considered, such as the dental age of the child and the condition of the tooth in question. For example, if an x-ray reveals that the cavity is small and the tooth is soon to be lost, treating the tooth would not be necessary. However, if it appears that the tooth will remain in place for years longer, removing the decay and placing a filling would be most prudent. If the tooth is severely decayed or shows signs of infection, extraction or treatment of the tooth should be considered.
The best way to prepare a child that needs a cavity filled is to familiarize them with the dental treatment. Explain what will happen and play a supportive role. Ask your child's dentist to explain the process, or to assist you with age-appropriate words and explanation aids. A good dentist will take into account the child's dental needs, personality and tolerance for treatment. A variety of anesthesia options are available including local and general anesthesia. Sometimes no anesthesia is necessary in cases where the cavity is very small.

Any day now, you are due to give birth. You have planned your nursery, read up on what is to be expected in the delivery room, and researched breastfeeding. Yet, you still wonder how prepared you really are? How much help will you really need? Have you thought about care for yourself besides just your newborn? There is no shame in admitting that you would like an extra pair of hands around, or perhaps a professional who is a specialist in the care of new mothers and newborn education.
Many women have a career and are now expecting their first baby. Most have had no previous infant experience or knowledge, and now would be a good time to hire a postpartum doula, or newborn care specialist, otherwise known as a baby nurse. These women come into your home the day you come home from the hospital. They bring to you a wealth of information about breastfeeding issues, newborn education, sleep training, colic issues, formula matters, swaddling techniques, infant massage, help with multiples, and night duty care. This ensures that the parents get a full nights rest so that they may cope with the following day with a clear head. Doulas are especially helpful if you have other children at home that will need your attention as well. Unfortunately, many of us live out of state from extended family. Not all of us can have our own mothers to help out as theirs did many years ago. A doula is there to meet the mother's needs.
Postpartum Doulas "mother the mother" as well as care for your infant while you rest or take a moment for yourself. A doula can run an errand for you while you sit and nurse your baby, take care of the laundry, or prepare a meal for the family. By doing this, she takes away your worries and keeps the home running smoothly. While she can do these services in order to give the mother time to rest, the newborn care specialist focuses totally on the care of your newborn. They are available on a hourly or 24/7 basis. You can sleep all night knowing there is somebody there to meet your baby's needs. A wise woman is admitting she could use help and asking for it. Newborns are our business.

There are numerous people around, who think of starting with a baby center of their own. Some people think of it as a business opportunity and earning profits out of it, whereas some just love being in the company of babies, and they find it one of the best ways to pass their free time. No matter whatever the reasons are, if you are planning to start a baby care center, you must plan it systematically.
