The Current State of Reptile Ownership

Reptiles as pets have received some bad press lately again. For those of us that are reptile lovers, bad press is what we have come to expect almost. We deal with it. We are moving on. My hope is that they do not deter those exploring young, budding herpetologists future, their interest. The bad press as of late revolves around the death of a Florida child caused by a pet Burmese Python and the alleged spread of Burmese pythons invade the Everglades in Florida. Then we havethe honorable Congress representatives of Guam (yes, the U.S. territory of Guam) which must be prohibited in principle a bill in Congress to the circulation or possession of farmed animals other than a dog or a cat.

The death of a child in Florida recently, while certainly tragic, should not be held liable for the alleged murderer - a Burmese Python. The 6ft. python, which appeared to be significantly malnourished, was reported to have been placed in a bag placed in an aquarium. Who houses aSnake in this manner? When a snake escapes from the housing did not immediately head for the smallest man in the house to him / her to swallow? No, it usually ends for a beautiful, dark hiding place. At least one of the parents of the child was in the apartment when the incident occurred. Had not heard the parent the child screem when the snake bit into it and began to coil? The details of this incident (as reported) do not wash only. However, if we expect things to happen, asreported, it is not the snake's fault that they escaped. It is irresponsible of the owners of the debt, not keep it properly fed and housed. The snake was just acting from the gut. The solution to this incident no further eliminate individual rights retained by restricting the property line, the solution consists of two parts, eye, who owns large constrictor (a measure which has the state of Florida is already in force) and an appropriate punishment Owners of the serpent involuntary man slaughter and irresponsible petProperty. Send a strong message to other large constrictors owners. Do not take away the right to possession.

Well, the over-hype, the media depicted takeover of the Burmese pythons in the Everglades. There are reportedly some 100,000 Burmese pythons admission, food and fish, alligators in the Everglades. To think we know those of you that know the science behind heat-sensing pythons, how stupid is that Burmese pythons eat fish. I would even say that its highly unlikely that awould eat an alligator. An alligator is much to consume more of a python. Excuse me, that short digression. It has a team of seven "hunter" in the Everglades locate Burmese pythons since Beginning of July 09 was'. At the time of writing this article, the team had caught a total of six pythons! Do you think it's safe to say that the estimate was of 100,000 pythons in the Everglades a bit exaggerated? Most of the pythons, which in the wild Florida probably escaped during tropical placeStorms and hurricanes. Many were housed in outdoor enclosures. The actual events of people aware of "release" pythons in the wild, I contend, is also greatly exaggerated. Here, too, to keep tabs on who holds it, and punish those who do not really care for them. Do not take away the ability to possess with joy that have large constrictor holder out of the possession and seedlings.

Finally, we have estimated the representatives of Congress from Guam and her accountOutlaw breeding and farming of animals (in particular) that are not of dogs, cats or livestock. As someone who has worked for a congressman, I did not even know it was a "representative" of Guam. The representative of Guam functions as the representative from the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. You are in Congress to "have a voice", but have no ability to vote. If they have no voting rights, why are we wasting taxpayers' money (six-figure salaries) on these"Representative?" Again, I have digressed. Sorry. Life has to pretty well on Guam, where it is exotic pets such representative biggest concern. I happened to find it highly offensive that in a time of recession, the honorable representative from Guam, not even wasting congressional voting power, the time for staff and committees of Congress with this crack laws.

Pet ownership, like many aspects of life requires thinking, responsibility, planning and research.Life can not be legislated. We must do what we can to promote responsibility. I do not believe that each of us has the magic answer to how to promote individual responsibility. There is probably no single answer. Education and regulation are part of the equation. The elimination of individual rights and the subsequent elimination of aspects of the joy of human life is certainly not the answer.
